A reef island, quietly at ease
Vakkaru Maldives sits on its own reef island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve reached by a 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé, or a short domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a 30-minute speedboat crossing. Once a coconut plantation, the island still carries over 2,300 coconut trees, and the name Vakkaru comes from the Dhivehi for coconut timber.
A house reef with two blue holes wraps the island, and 111 villas and residences run along its 1.6km beach and out over the lagoon. Merana Spa sits above the water at one end of the island, while seven restaurants, a serious wine cellar and a supervised kids' club fill the days between.
