One island, one reef, one atoll
Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa sits alone in North Huvadhoo, or Gaafu Alifu, the largest and deepest natural atoll in the Maldives. No channel was ever cut into the reef to build it; divers hand-placed the stilts of the water villas so the coral below was left undisturbed. The result is a house reef that runs the full circumference of the island, close enough to reach by wading in from the sand.
SCDA Architects of Singapore kept the design low and unadorned: timber, stone and thatch, with 51 villas spread between garden, beach and lagoon. A three-bedroom residence sits at the reef's edge for larger parties, while The Vidhun Spa and four restaurants, including an overwater Japanese room and a plant-based treehouse, occupy the rest of the island without ever crowding it.
