MOUNTAIN LODGE · CHAMAREL

Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge

A boutique lodge 350 metres up in the Chamarel hills, with private-pool suites, a working meditation labyrinth, and views that run from forest to the Le Morne lagoon.

A lodge grown from forgotten ground

Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge sits at Piton Canot, roughly 350 metres above sea level in the hill village of Chamarel, south-west Mauritius. The founders bought the overgrown plot in 1996, when it had no road, no water and no buyers, and spent a decade clearing it by hand before the first three rooms opened in 2004.

Twenty-four rooms, suites and villas are scattered through gardens the owners planted themselves, each named after an endemic tree, bird or mountain in view. There is no beach here — the coast at Le Morne is a fifteen-minute shuttle away — but there is a private pool in most categories, a spa built on local ingredients, and a stone labyrinth for guests who want to walk rather than swim.
