A private island, far from the crowds
JA Manafaru occupies its own island at the northern tip of the Maldives, in Haa Alifu Atoll, where the house reef runs close to shore and the nearest neighbouring resort is out of sight. Getting there is part of the appeal: a short domestic flight from Male to Hanimaadhoo followed by a speedboat crossing, or a direct seaplane transfer for those who prefer not to change planes.
Eighty-four villas and residences sit either over the lagoon or along the beach, each with its own pool. Six restaurants include The Cellar, a wine room built into volcanic rock beneath the island, and Kuri, a treehouse that opens after dark for five courses. Calm Spa Sanctuary is tucked among banyan trees at the island's quiet end.
