Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru sits on its own small island in North Malé Atoll, twenty to thirty minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. A living house reef rings the island close enough to reach on foot from several villas, and the resort has long marketed itself, with some justification, as the original Maldives: barefoot, low-rise, and built around the reef rather than around a runway.
Forty-eight private pool villas sit in garden or beachfront settings, never far from the water. Three restaurants cover Japanese, Thai and Maldivian ground, a spa built on eight pillars of wellbeing runs alongside them, and the island's own Marine Lab - the first built on a private Maldives resort - has been restoring coral here since 2004.
