A private island in a living reef
Amilla occupies its own island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve fifteen minutes from Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays and whale sharks gather with the current. The seaplane crossing from Velana International Airport takes thirty-five minutes; a short domestic flight to Dharavandhoo cuts that to fifteen. More than seventy per cent of the 23.5-hectare island is left as it was found, threaded with banyans and some 2,500 coconut palms.
Sixty-seven villas and residences sit along the beach, over the lagoon, and up in the treetop canopy, each with its own pool. Seven restaurants, a spa built into the jungle side of the island, and a house reef that starts at the sand keep the days loosely structured, and Amilla's own Blue Hole gives snorkellers a reason to stay in past breakfast.
